This is my first post on my brand new blog. I look forward to sharing my SEO experiences with you as I learn the mystique that is search engine optimization. My first post will explain setting up a Wordpress blog. This is a task that thousands upon thousands of people have performed. However I ran into a little trouble and I would like to share that experience with you.
When setting up a WordPress blog you have two options, either you organize the hosting yourself or WordPress handles it. If you’re not planning to have a blog for long or don’t want to pay for hosting go with the option of WordPress hosting your blog. Please note, if you decide to choose this option part of the URL will have WordPress in the title (not good for SEO) and also if you decide to keep your blog going you won’t be able to move it at a later stage to another hosting account. I chose to organize my own hosting and selected my own domain name, all for a small fee. Choosing a hosting company to go with is a task in itself but, after much research I decided to go with GoDaddy.
The next stage is to download a file transfer program (FTP), which takes files from your computer and uploads them to your hosting account which in turn updates your website. Sounds complicated but it’s not that difficult to use. I chose to download a free program called FileZilla, I’ve used it at work and it’s pretty straightforward. Next go to the WordPress download page and download the famous 5 minute install software program. There are plenty of guides on the site explaining what to do.
The problem I ran into was when it asked to edit the wp-config.php file. I made the required changes the document asked for and uploaded the files via FTP but, it wouldn’t work. I went back and double checked everything including the password and user name several times and I even called GoDaddy but, still no luck. This went on for awhile and then I noticed there were spaces in the html code, so: make sure you have no spaces between the inverted commas and your text! Also, the DB name and DB user are the same, with GoDaddy and some other hosting providers need you to change the DB Host details. Remember you can not leave it as localhost. Once you done these tasks you should have success and be ready to begin you blogging career. Good Luck!!
