Sydney NYE Celebrations
With just under 2 months to the big night, it’s probably a good idea to start planning where you want to spend New Year’s Eve 2009. Of course you can stay at home but travelling to a different city or country is definitely a lot more exciting!
Planning and deciding where to go is always a challenge facing NYE revellers but to help I’ve put together a list of the hottest New Years Eve destinations of 2009.
- Starting with my home country, Australia and the best place to be is Sydney. Up to a million people pack into the harbour city for a view of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which explodes into light with one of the best fireworks displays in the world. Get there earlier to secure your vantage point!
- New York’s, Times Square is a famous NYE celebration point. Each year thousands of people stand in the cold waiting for a massive exploding ball to drop from the sky on the strike of midnight. With last year’s temperature hovering around -10c (14f) I know this year I will be in a warmer place for NYE!
- Edinburgh’s New Years Eve bash is called Hogmanany, and it’s one of the largest street parties in Europe. Hogmanany has DJ’s, bands, fireworks and plenty of whiskey to fight of the cold Scottish weather.
- Up to 2 million pack the famous Copacabana beach in Rio for a massive fireworks display. Brazil’s second largest party after Carnival, NYE in Rio is one wild night! Most likely strangers will share and spray you with Champagne, which is meant to bring good luck. Also you will notice a lot of the locals will dress in white to mark the occasion.
- Cancun, Mexico is a short flight from the East or West Coast of America and is the perfect destination to escape the winter blues! There’s something for all ages in Cancun from wild and loud bars to cruises or simply relaxing on the beach. And if you’re up for it there’s no better way to see in the New Year than skinny-dipping in the warm ocean (just make sure you play it safe).
- Cape Town’s, Table Mountain has the best view of the city’s fireworks display. It takes only 10 minutes in a cable car to reach the top of this amazing South African mountain.
Where will you spend New Year’s Eve 2009? If you know of a good spot leave a comment and share your knowledge!
The countdown is on!

I did the new york time square NYE. it was really a great experience. But if your planning on doing it yourself, pack for it, snacks drinks and such. And getting home will be an issue. If your new to the city, bring a map and better yet plan an exist route before going.
Too cold for me standing outside but glad to hear somebody liked Times Square
